The article reports complete agreement for the samples tested but contains an ambiguous internal RT-PCR metric; the ex vivo workflow adds 10 min of lysis.
Paracrystalline graphite combines hardness, plasticity and weakly temperature-dependent conduction
Made from C60 at 13 GPa and 900 °C, this carbon reaches a hardness of 33.7 ± 1.1 GPa, 12 % plastic strain in 2 µm micropillars and conductivity that varies by less than 12 % between 4 and 450 K. The combination is new, but it has only been demonstrated on millimeter-scale samples and has not undergone industrial qualification.
The proton's baryon number may not be carried by its quarks — the gluon-junction hypothesis regains ground
Since the 1970s, a marginal hypothesis has held that what makes a proton a proton is not lodged in its three quarks, but in a Y-shaped junction made of gluons. The STAR collaboration has weighed the two scenarios on four billion collisions of isobaric nuclei — two billion per species — and on photon-gold collisions: baryon number reaches the centre of the collision nearly twice as efficiently as the naive expectation of the quark picture. The authors conclude that this picture is disfavored, without announcing any statistical significance or claiming to have detected the junction.
To edit a genome better, first switch off the genes that slow delivery down
Rather than refining the editing tool yet again, a Wisconsin team turned the question around: which human genes prevent the tool from reaching its destination? A screen across 19,114 genes points to six. Switching off just one of them, GJB2, raises correction of a blinding mutation from 5.8% to 46.6% in patient-derived retinal cells, and restores measurable electrical activity to the faulty ion channel in a fraction of the edited cells. Cell-culture work: nothing has yet been tested in an organism.
The ovary always keeps the same share of its reserve in activation: 14%, from puberty to the end of reproductive life
By mapping more than 85,000 oocytes in whole mouse ovaries using light-sheet microscopy, a CRG team shows that the share of the reserve undergoing activation stays close to 14% while the stock itself collapses by more than an order of magnitude. Regulation appears proportional rather than absolute.
A radial-nanochannel carbon makes it possible to heat a platinum-cobalt catalyst to 1000 °C without coarsening it
Ordering a platinum-cobalt alloy requires heat; but heat coarsens the nanoparticles and ruins their active surface. A team at Washington University in St. Louis reports breaking that trade-off by confining the particles inside carbon channels.
