Technical Explanation
1. Multi-tube boiler — The Rocket uses 25 copper tubes of 76 mm diameter running through the boiler. This innovation multiplied the heating surface area compared to single-flue boilers, accelerating the heat transfer from combustion gases to water. Vaporization efficiency increased dramatically.
2. Blast pipe (forced exhaust) — Spent steam is ejected into the chimney through a converging nozzle. The resulting Venturi effect draws air through the firebox, intensifying combustion. The faster the locomotive accelerates, the stronger the draft — a positive feedback loop that self-regulates.
3. Inclined cylinders — Two cylinders of 203 mm × 419 mm are mounted at 35° beneath the boiler, directly driving the driving wheels via connecting rods. This layout lowers the center of gravity and reduces oscillations at high speed.
Why It Worked
The four other competitors at the Rainhill Trials (Novelty, Sans Pareil, Perseverance, Cycloped) failed due to overheating, mechanical breakdowns, or insufficient performance. The Rocket combined three synergistic innovations: the multi-tube boiler maximized steam production, the blast pipe sustained combustion without human intervention, and the inclined cylinders transmitted power without destructive vibrations.
The competition required 20 round trips over 2.8 km (56 km total) at a minimum speed of 16 km/h. The Rocket covered the distance at an average of 19 km/h hauling 13 tonnes — three times the minimum requirement.

At the inauguration of the Liverpool-Manchester line on September 15, 1830, Member of Parliament William Huskisson stepped onto the track to greet the Duke of Wellington.
