Technical Explanation

1. The break-bulk problem. Before 1956, maritime freight was handled as "break-bulk": crates, sacks, and barrels of heterogeneous sizes. A 10,000-tonne ship required 6–7 days of loading with 100+ dockworkers. Port labour costs represented 60–75% of the total cost of maritime transport. Losses from theft reached 5–6% of cargo.

2. McLean's insight: transport the trailer. McLean, owner of McLean Trucking (the 2nd-largest US road haulier), realised that the bottleneck was not the ship but the truck-to-ship transfer. If the entire trailer were standardised and stackable, the truck, ship, train, and gantry would all speak the same dimensional "language."

3. ISO 668 standardisation (1968). Eight twist-lock corner fittings enable universal locking. The 20-foot container (TEU — Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit) measures 6,096 × 2,438 × 2,591 mm, with a maximum gross weight of 24,000 kg. The 40-foot container (FEU) doubles the length. Corten steel (resistant to atmospheric corrosion) ensures a service life of 15–20 years in maritime operation.

4. The container gantry crane. The gantry crane (rail-mounted portal) loads 30–40 containers/hour compared to 1.7 tonnes/hour in break-bulk. Automated terminals (Rotterdam APM, 2015) achieve 50+ moves/hour using AGVs (Automated Guided Vehicles).

Why It Worked

The key is intermodality: a single container moves from truck to train to ship without any human touching the goods inside. This simultaneously eliminates three costs: transhipment labour, pilferage losses, and ship idle time in port. The container transformed transport into a commodity: you no longer pay to "move objects" but to "move a box."

McLean's genius was seeing the logistics chain as a single system rather than a series of disconnected segments. By standardising the interface between modes, he made each link in the chain interchangeable — a principle that software engineers would later recognise as "loose coupling."
